From an August 4 City of Piedmont press release:
As students return to school, families dropping off and picking up students in the Civic Center may need to adjust routes to adapt to recent circulation changes: Bonita Avenue between Vista and Oakland Avenues is now one-way in the northbound direction, towards Oakland Avenue.
Drivers can no longer turn onto Bonita from Oakland Avenue, and the Havens Elementary drop-off zone on Bonita has been eliminated. These changes apply most directly to Havens families but may also affect routes to other schools and facilities in the Civic Center.
Families should review their usual route before the first day of school and consider whether changes are needed – or may work better – under the new traffic pattern. Allow extra travel time during the first week as drivers become familiar with the changes.
The Piedmont Police Department will station staff at the Bonita/Oakland intersection during the first week of school to assist during the transition.
Havens families: Main drop-off zone is now Highland Avenue
Highland Avenue is now the primary pick-up/drop-off area for Havens Elementary. Loading zones are available on both sides of the street, and a crossing guard is available to assist students crossing Highland.
Secondary zones remain available on Oakland and Vista Avenues. Havens families should review the school’s updated pick-up/drop-off information before school begins and use Highland Avenue whenever possible.
Use caution while driving in Civic Center as students return to school
Traffic and pedestrian activity will increase throughout the Civic Center when school resumes. Drivers should slow down, follow posted signs and traffic laws, and watch carefully for students and other pedestrians.
When picking up or dropping off students:
• Use designated loading zones and follow the restrictions posted on signs
• Do not stop in travel lanes or other undesignated areas
• Allow extra time and avoid unsafe turns or last-minute maneuvers
• Remain alert for crossing guards and pedestrians at intersections
Planning ahead and driving carefully will help make the return to school safer and smoother for everyone.
