Oakland firefighters knocked down a vegetation fire near Chabot Space and Science Center in Joaquin Miller Park on Friday night.
Multiple trees were reported burning in the 10000 block of Skyline Boulevard near Joaquin Miller Road, the Oakland Fire Department said on social media.
About 50 firefighters were called out to the blaze, which burned about a half-acre and was mostly knocked down after three water drops from helicopters, the department said.
“You could see the fire from downtown Oakland,” Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said. “The wind was not super strong at the time. The lack of wind contributed to the fact that the fire did not spread.”
Multiple calls to emergency dispatchers reported smoke in the Oakland Hills near the Sequoia Bayview Trail about 6:45 p.m., Hunt said.
Firefighters could see smoke from the roadway in Joaquin Miller Park but couldn’t see flames until they hiked about three-quarters of a mile into the park, Hunt said.
The fire went to two alarms, drawing firefighters from Oakland, Cal Fire, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the East Bay Regional Park District.
“It was a phenomenal job by the crews to locate the origin of the fire and identify appropriate resources to extinguish it,” Hunt said.
Crews will be in the area all night to make sure the fire is fully doused and doesn’t reignite, he said.
