Piedmont says yes to parcel tax extension

Tax measures were on the ballot to fund school districts in three Alameda County communities in Tuesday’s election, but only Piedmont voters appear to have signed off on the proposal put in front of them.

Piedmont Unified School District’s Measure H proposed extending an existing $3,174 parcel tax to raise an estimated $12 million until it is modified or repealed by voters, and had nearly 80% of the vote, according to the latest results, well above the two-thirds majority needed to pass in the district of about 2,500 students.

As of Wednesday morning, provisional elections results showed 1,848 votes in favor of Measure H and 469 votes opposed.

The largest of the three districts with measures on Tuesday’s ballot was Hayward Unified School District, which asked voters to approve Measure G, a $98 parcel tax to provide roughly $4 million annually for 12 years.

However, the latest results showed Measure G had less than 60% approval, well below the two-thirds majority needed to help fund the district of more than 19,000 students.

Measure B in Castro Valley Unified School District proposed a bond that would levy a $52.50 tax per $100,000 of assessed value to raise $212 million for school facility maintenance if 55% of voters approved it, but only 47.05% had voted yes in the latest results shared by the county.

CVUSD has 16 schools and serves about 10,000 students.
