Around a hundred people attended Mountain View Cemetery’s 102nd Memorial Day Commemoration on Monday. The chilly and overcast day was in keeping with the somber tone, as speakers called on the assembled to remember the men and women in uniform who lost their lives in service to the country.
The event’s guest speakers were Chief Tranquilino Herrera, a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force and Steve Johnson from the Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War. Cemetery docent and author, Dennis Evanovsky, made the Memorial Day proclamation.
The event was hosted by the Mountain View Cemetery Association. Rev. John Sutton, a U.S. Navy Reserve officer and Cemetery trustee gave the invocation and benediction. Piedmont Scouts’ Troop 6 were on hand for the presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance, and placed flowers on the graves of fallen veterans at the ceremony’s conclusion. The David Hardiman Trio, Piedmont Highlanders Drum and Pipe Trio, and TOSCA singing group provided patriotic musical accompaniment.
