Piedmont High School’s track and field teams had another standout week at the North Coast Section Bayshore championships at Hayward High on May 16.
The girls team finished seventh with 27 ½ points. St. Mary’s-Albany won going away with 118 points. Bishop O’Dowd was second with 69.
The boys team was eighth with 25 points. El Cerrito won the team title with 86 followed by the Dragons with 73.
The top six finishers (after scratches) plus those making certain qualifying marks advanced to the NCS Meet of Champions, which will be held at Dublin High on May 22-23. The top three finishers there (plus qualifiers) will advance to the California Interscholastic Federation championships.
The girls were led by their 400-meter relay team of Akunna Iroh, Claire Aubrecht, Darcy McKee, and Nia Jackson, which finished second in 49.21 seconds. Aubrecht lowered her own school records in the 100 and 200, qualifying by time by finishing seventh in the 100 (12.45) and fifth in the 200 (25.59). She also helped the 1,600 relay team qualify by finishing fifth in 4:17.39, running with Skylar Best, Daniela Lucaccini, and Iroh.
Uzoma Iroh made the mark in two events, taking third in the discus at 111 feet, 1 inch and fifth in the shot put at 33-6 ½. Lucia Dorsey tied for third in the high jump at 4-10 with teammate Malia Williams. Best was sixth in the 800 in 2:24.64.
Gladwin Horsley was seventh in the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 50.38. The 3,200 relay team of Leighton Mand, Cora Brozowski Schrader, Best, and Nikita Gorelik was seventh in 10:50.93. Saniyah Johnson took seventh in the shot put at 32-3.
Sebastien Swain was second in the boys 800 at 1:56.46. Bishop O’Dowd’s James Prater won the race in 1:56.35. The 1,600 relay team of Rehan Mumtaz, Swain, Ben Gerber, and Maddox Ma was second in 3:25.02. El Cerrito took first in 3:22.61. Avedis Gourjian was third in the pole vault at 11-3.
Ma finished fifth in the 400 at 50.23. Noah Hildebrand was sixth in the triple jump at 40-7 with Raiden Holt eighth at 40-2 ¼.
