Piedmont High School’s baseball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win at Alameda on April 24. The victory gave the Highlanders a split of a home-and-home series with the Hornets.
Piedmont got off to a good start in the win, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Jonah Cha-Foster led off the game with a double and then came home on a throwing error after Lucas Delventhal reached on a fielder’s choice. Jack Meyjes then reached on an error, scoring Delventhal.
In the second, Sammy Ragones was hit by a pitch with one out and Enzo Ong followed with a bunt single. Cha-Foster then doubled in Ragones. Delventhal followed with a sacrifice fly and Meyjes singled in the third run of the inning.
Archer Schullstrom singled in a run for Alameda in the third to make it 5-1. Another Hornets error brought home a run in the fifth for Piedmont.
Alameda rallied in the bottom of the seventh. A single and a walk sandwiched around a strikeout put runners on first and second. An error brought one run home. With two outs, Bryson Edwards doubled in a run, putting runners on second and third with Schullstrom representing the tying run. However, Ben Sorensen struck him out to end the game and earn the save.
Meyjes went the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks to get the win. Sorensen struck out two of the three hitters he faced.
Gavin Cerda-Zein went the first three innings for the Hornets, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk to take the loss.
Cha-Foster went three for four with two runs scored and an RBI. Meyjes went two for four with an RBI.
On April 22, Alameda’s Carter Grant threw a no-hitter as the Hornets won, 7-0. Grant walked three and struck out nine in a dominant performance.
He got the only run he would need in the first inning when Schullman hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Jaden Noonan.
Alameda got two more in the third on a two-run homer by Schullman. The Hornets added a run in the fifth and broke it open with three in the seventh with Noonan keying the inning with a two-run double.
Schullman was three for four with four runs and three RBI. He had two doubles and the homer. Noonan was three for four with three RBI. Massimo Mittone took the loss for Piedmont, going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts. George Bishop went one inning, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Highlanders are 9-11-2 entering a home-and-home series with Berkeley beginning on April 28 at Berkeley. The teams will play at Piedmont on April 30.
