Piedmont Middle School softball returned from spring break on Thursday and picked up right where they left off, handing the visiting Albany Cobras a 9-3 loss in a tightly contested 4-inning game at Witter Field.

The Scots once again leaned on their aces in the circle, with 8th graders Bailey Gregovich and Madi Farboud combining on a 5 hit / 2 walk / 10 strikeout effort backstopped by a tandem of Simone Tornatore and Abby Gregovich at catcher. While the offense was far from explosive, the Scots took advantage of seven free passes as well as converting two big dropped third strikes into base runners.

Back row, L-R: Anya Giri, Evie Joerger, Mackenzie Ewen, Bailey Gregovich, Madi Farboud, Simone Tornatore, Nina Stock and Mailey Small; middle row L-R: Olive Dao-Hoang, Keira Spina, Sarina Hill, Clara Blanchard; front: Abby Gregovich.

Tornatore provided a spark at the plate with a big two RBI single with two outs in the third for her second hit of the afternoon. Bailey Gregovich also had a towering double to right center.

Solid defense all afternoon kept the Cobras at bay, with two key dropped third strikeouts at first on strong throws from Abby Gregovich as well as an unassisted double play from Sarina Hill, who snared a line drive to second and then nonchalantly glided over the bag to double off the runner.

The Scots will now pack their bags for an extended road trip that has them scheduled to tour eight different ballparks in the Oakland and Berkeley area before returning home for the playoffs in early May.
