As the high school swim season heads into its most important stretch, Piedmont High is in a strong position, backed by competitive rankings at both the section and state levels.
The Piedmont boys team has emerged as one of California’s top programs this season, currently ranked 9th in California and 2nd in the North Coast Section (NCS). Undefeated in dual meets with a 3–0 record, the boys have shown both depth and consistency across events. Key contributions from sprinter Nik Costello, backstroker Jeffrey Latronica, and freshman distance phenom Ryan Mak have helped the team maintain an average score of 529.48 points, placing them among the state’s elite.
The girls team has made steady progress as well. Their dual meet record stands at 1–2, but strong individual swims and relay performances show a team gaining momentum. Athletes like Samantha White and Cynthia Wu have delivered in both sprint and distance events, helping the team score and build confidence heading into championships.
In their recent dual meet against Berkeley, the boys secured a 106–64 victory, with strong performances across all the strokes. Dima Secor posted a 1:45.38 in the 200 freestyle, Asher Takazawa turned in a 52.37 in the 100 butterfly, and Cole Carnazzo impressed with a 1:57.89 in the 200 IM. These performances, even in a low stakes dual meet, demonstrate the potential for the championship season.

The girls faced a tougher challenge against the reigning WACC champions and fell 21–129, but several swimmers provided highlights. Sofia Vuori swam a 1:00.28 in the 100 freestyle, and Tai March-Cunningham posted a 30.48 in the 50 freestyle. Despite the loss, these swims show growth and give valuable experience as the team prepares for May.
Piedmont will return back to the pool this week for a dual meet against Alameda High, followed by Senior Night against Castro Valley (at the newly opened Piedmont Pool!). From there, the focus shifts to the postseason, with the WACC Championships, NCS, and CIF State Championships taking place in back to back to back weeks, giving both the boys and girls teams an opportunity to build on a strong season and leave their mark in the record books.
