Magnolia Music School is now in its first school year, having opened in September 2025 just steps from the Morcom Rose Garden on Grand Avenue. Founded by local music educator Kat White, Magnolia has quickly become a gathering place for young musicians from across Oakland and Piedmont — many of whom have been part of Kat’s teaching community for years through private lessons, choirs, and camps.

This summer will mark Magnolia’s first full season of music camps in its new home.

Running weekly throughout June and July and into early August, Magnolia’s camps are designed for children ages 6–11 and center around the idea that music learning should feel creative, social, and deeply engaging.

Each camp day includes singing, instrument exploration, songwriting play, movement, and creative art projects, along with outdoor time in the neighborhood near the Rose Garden.

Groups are thoughtfully shaped by age and experience, allowing beginners and more experienced students alike to feel supported and challenged. Older campers are often given opportunities to lead, and teen counselors — many of them Magnolia students — help create a warm and collaborative environment.

Magnolia’s opening was made possible in part by strong support from the local community, including many Piedmont families who contributed to its founding and continue to be part of its growing student body.

Camp hours run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with an optional extended day until 3:00 p.m.
