Piedmont Beautification Foundation embraces two new projects, revisits two others

At its March Meeting Trustees and Advisors of the Piedmont Beautification Foundation were presented with two new projects. Option A results from a new law in California prohibiting cities after the end of this year from using drinking water to irrigate “nonfunctional” lawn—that is grass that has no recreational or community purpose. Option B expands upon PBF’s project from last Fall to install new swings in the tot lot near the Exedra. It will create a mulched area adjacent to the new swings for nature and adventure play.

The City staff has determined that there are many areas of lawn that will be affected by the prohibition on using drinking water for grass. The project contemplates replacing the lawns with water-wise attractive native plants which will result in a dramatic reduction in the use of water while educating Piedmont residents on how their lawns can likewise be transformed into environmentally friendly, attractive gardens.

Choice B is already under construction. Two dying Redwood trees in Piedmont Park had to be removed, and sections have already been sawed into steppingstones to be installed near the tot lot. Additionally, PBF has already determined to plant two new Dogwood trees in that area in memory of Sue Herrick, long time member of the PBF Board, a past President of PBF, as well as Chair of the Park Commission and numerous other volunteer activities.

Both options excited PBF Trustees and Advisors, resulting in extended conversation as to which one should be selected to be the target of PBF’s upcoming Spring Campaign. Ultimately both options were selected for support. PBF voted to contribute $15,000 from its general funds to support the lawn conversion project and use the Spring Campaign to support the mulched nature play area next to the tot lot and new swings. The nature area will greatly enhance the play opportunities, complimenting the swing project which was extremely popular with donors. Moreover, the project will enhance the memorial Dogwood Trees in memory of Sue Herrick, a much-loved volunteer.

The City reported that construction of the Dearing Memorial will begin soon. PBF’s campaign in support of this project is nearing its goal, and the Spring Brochure will note that contributions can put it over the top.

Last, but certainly not least, the City reminded all that the opening of the new swimming pool complex will occur on April 11. PBF was the second largest contributor to this project after PRFO. Its contribution funded the spectacular plantings that dramatically enhance the complex. Not only is the planting attractive, but most importantly, a low user of water and easy to maintain.

Residents can expect to receive PBF’s Spring Brochure later this spring. In the meantime, donations to any of the above referenced projects can be made immediately by mail to PBF at the Piedmont City Hall, 120 Vista Ave., Piedmont 94611 or by visiting its website at www.PiedmontBeautificationFoundation.org.
