Highlanders shining on weekends
Piedmont High School’s track and field team has come out strong at the early season weekend invitationals.
The Highlanders competed at both the K-Bell Track and Field Classic at Westmont High School and the Dan Gabor Invitational at Amador Valley on March 7.
Claire Aubrecht was strong in the sprints at K-Bell, taking second in the girls 100 meters in 12.70 seconds and eighth in the 400 in 1:03.02. The boys 400 relay team of Rehan Mumtaz, Maddux Ma, Noah Hussain, and Diego Hurwitz won the event in 44.36.
Mumtaz was ninth in the 100 in 11.26 while Maddux was 13th in 11.36. Ma was seventh in the 400 in 51.83. Mumtaz was 14th in 53.27 while Ben Gerber was 15th in 53.35.
Hurwitz was seventh in the triple jump at 39 feet, three inches. Raiden Holt was 11th at 37-0 ¼.
Skylar Best took 11th in the girls 800 at the Dan Gabor Invitational in 2:23.44.
Piedmont also competed at the Skyline Invitational on Feb. 28. Sebastien Swain took fifth in the boys 3,200 in 10:06.53. Mumtaz was fourth in the 100 in 11.27, fourth in the long jump at 21-3 and 13th in the triple jump at 36-6. Ma was 11th in the 100 in 11.46.
Dresden Schulte-Sasse was ninth in the 3,200 in 10:20.47. The 400 relay team was fifth in 44.69.
Avedis Gourjian tied for third in the pole vault at 10-7.
Malia Williams won the girls high jump at 4-11. Darcy McKee was ninth at 4-3. Leighton Mand was eighth in the 800 in 2:30.30. Best was ninth in 2:30.62. Uzoma Iroh was fifth in the discus at 88-1. Abigail Jacoby finished ninth in the shot put at 26-9½.
Shayna Chau took fifth in the pole vault at 8-7. Akunna Iroh was seventh in the long jump at 15-3. Williams was 12th at 14-11 ¼. Akunna Iroh also took 11th in the triple jump at 31-6.
Piedmont’s 400 relay team was fifth in 53.26.
