The Board of Education on March 4 unanimously approved a 10-year agreement with Scoreboard Media to provide a new digital scoreboard for Binks Gym. In exchange, the company will have exclusive rights to sell and manage advertising and sponsorships displayed on the screens during games. Under the terms of the agreement, the school district reserves the right to reject any messaging, advertising, or sponsors, PHS Athletic Director Tyler Small told the Board on Wednesday night.
A new digital scoreboard, including installation, costs approximately $150,000, according to the district.
Scoreboard Media will buy and own the digital scoreboard to be installed in Binks Gym. In exchange, Scoreboard Media will have exclusive rights to the revenues from advertising and sponsorships that appear on the digital screens during games. The District will receive 25% of net revenues for referrals made by the school district.
The district said that it would only need to pay for a structural engineer, perhaps some additional wiring to meet the scoreboard’s electric and data requirements, and an annual software license starting at $7,500 per year. Small said the district would use the approximately $16,000 raised for a scoreboard project so far to pay for these upfront costs. He said he expected the district’s share of ad revenue would cover the annual $7,500 software licensing fee.
Small told board members the proposal had the support of Piedmont Boosters. “This is much more than just a scoreboard now,” said Small, because the platform can be used to stream workouts, replays, highlight athletes, and more. Ads will only be shown during games.
Small said the plan is to order the scoreboard this spring, for delivery and installation over the summer.
