Locals turn out to protest ICE at Saturday rally

In solidarity with Minnesota residents and anti-ICE protesters around the country, Piedmont residents took over the intersection of Oakland and Highland Avenues on Saturday, waving handmade posters and signs condemning the violent tactics and fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal agents in Minneapolis in January. Immigration agents have also been implicated in the deaths of two others — Geraldo Campos was killed by law enforcement officers in an immigration detention facility in Texas on Jan. 3 and Keith Porter Jr was fatally shot by an off-duty ICE officer in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve

The Guardian reported that more than 300 anti-ICE protests were planned across the U.S. last weekend. The Piedmont Racial Equity Campaign (PREC) organized the local rally.

The demonstration followed a walkout by Piedmont students on Friday.
