The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer last week in Minneapolis spurred Piedmont resident Heather Haggarty to team up with Oakland friends to organize a protest in Splash Pad Park on Sunday, Jan. 11. The protest, organized by Haggarty, Andrea Muchin, and Laura Linden, was part of a nationwide outpouring of anger at the Trump administration and the surge of immigration officers in Minnesota and elsewhere in the country.
A broad coalition of groups that included Indivisible, the ACLU, MoveOn, and 50501 called for a coordinated “ICE Out For Good” Weekend of Action on Saturday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 11 after the shooting. The Oakland effort grew organically.
“We joined forces, invited our friends, and 800+ concerned citizens showed up,” said Haggarty. “The commitment was deep, the honking enthusiastic and the love for this country and each other real. It was super easy — anyone can do this! You don’t need to wait for someone else to do something — just do it,” she said.
