PHS junior and Girl Scout Ambassador Lucy Allen built on her spring book donation drive to the East Bay Children’s Book Project and collected another 1,000+ books this fall to donate to the literacy and learning organization.
Allen put together a book drive during the Havens Elementary School Book Fair and collected books from friends and neighbors over the weekend for her Girl Scout Community Service Award. She collected 258 books from Havens’ families during the Book Fair and 1,202 books from friends and neighbors, for a grand total of 1,460 books.
Allen dropped off the books at the East Bay Children’s Book Project — open every Tuesday 3:30-5:30 p.m. — and helped shelve them with volunteers Ellen Reed, Randi Voorhies and others.

The East Bay Children’s Book Project was founded to help build literacy by putting books into the hands of children who have little or no access to them.
For the Girl Scout Gold Award — an award that addresses a root cause such as low childhood literacy rates and is sustainable over time — Allen has been working with the Alameda County Community Food Bank, Oakland Children’s Hospital and Elizabeth House to make sure they get seasonal book box deliveries. She has also created procedures to make it easy for EBCBP volunteers to reach out to community organizations and offer to make deliveries 3-4 times a year.
