Obituary | Marianne Buroff Sheldon, 1946-2025

Marianne Buroff Sheldon, longtime resident of Piedmont, CA, passed away at Alta Bates Summit Hospital on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

Marianne was born on July 16, 1946 to Archer C. Buroff and Stefania M. Buroff and raised in Linden, NJ. She pursued a career in academics, culminating in both a Masters and PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Having joined Mills College in Oakland, CA in 1975 as a Professor of History, Marianne celebrated 50 years of service upon her retirement in June 2025. Over these years, she contributed to the college in innumerable ways — serving as dean of the Division of Social Sciences, directing graduate studies, holding the position of Associate Provost, keeping the college accredited through her work with WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and acting for many years as the Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Marianne was a distinguished scholar whose research and publications enriched the field of American History. Her scholarly work was matched only by her exceptional gifts as a teacher. Known for her engaging lectures, rigorous yet supportive approach, and genuine investment in student success, Marianne had a remarkable ability to make history come alive in the classroom. She cared deeply for her students, inspired countless individuals throughout her five decades of teaching, and her colleagues describe her as irreplaceable.

Marianne’s daughter describes her mother as strong and independent, with unmatched resilience. Marianne also found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She stepped into her role as “Nana” with patience and unwavering love. Marianne would engage and play wholeheartedly with her grandchildren and made every effort to attend birthdays, school events, and weekend visits.

Marianne also cared for her pet parakeets and finches. She enjoyed traveling—most notably, her favorite destinations were Lake Tahoe and Hawaii.

Marianne was preceded in her death by her parents and her partner, Scott Gunderson of Piedmont, CA, and nephew Jonathan Buroff. She is survived by her daughter Meredith Hatch of Los Angeles, CA, son-in-law Denison Hatch, and grandchildren Charlotte Hatch and Denison Hatch, as well as by her brother Alan Buroff of Old Lyme, CT, sister-in-law Kathy Bartus, nieces Karen Buroff and Andrea Buroff, and nephew Todd Buroff.
