Oakland police arrested two organizers, seized six vehicles and recovered a firearm Friday in an investigation into a large-scale sideshow that occurred late last month.

About 100 cars and 300 spectators were involved in the illegal demonstration of automotive stunts on Aug. 24.

Two primary organizers were taken into custody for promoting and facilitating the shows, police said. Oakland officers, Sonoma County Sheriff’s deputies and the California Highway Patrol served search warrants on residences in Oakland and Santa Rosa.

Officers spent nearly three weeks looking into the “large and highly disruptive” event that stretched from 47th Street and Adeline Street, to 41st Street and Howe Street, to 98th Avenue and International Boulevard, and to 42nd Avenue and International Boulevard, police said.

“Sideshows of this nature have become a persistent public safety challenge across the state,” Oakland police said in a news release. “They have a significant impact on the community and cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to city infrastructure.”

The shows endangered the public through reckless and criminal behavior, including setting off illegal fireworks, negligent discharge of firearms, and setting a vehicle on fire, police said.
