Children and families in San Francisco’s Sunset District have a new play space with the reopening of the Sigmund Stern Grove Playground after a $4.1 million renovation, city officials said.
Nestled among the trees of Stern Grove off Sloat Boulevard, the playground has been redesigned into a woodland-inspired play village with treehouse-style structures, climbing nets, timber log features, swings, and a new nature exploration zone. The renovation also included upgraded surfacing, improved pathways, lawn areas, and landscaping.
“The reimagined Stern Grove Playground is a great addition to an iconic San Francisco park. Now transformed into a treehouse village, it gives San Francisco’s kids the chance to climb, explore, and imagine,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement Wednesday. “Reopenings like this show our city at its best — when every neighborhood has parks and spaces where kids can thrive and play.”

San Francisco Public Works managed construction for the project, which is part of Let’sPlaySF!, a public-private partnership to renovate 13 playgrounds across the city. With Stern Grove’s completion, 12 of the 13 sites have now been finished.
The renovation, which began in August 2024, was funded in part by contributions from the Hellman Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, the Koret Foundation, San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation, the Lisa and John Pritzker Family Fund, Jackie and Joby Pritzker, and others.
