The city of Oakland has announced a three-year, $12.4 million contract to support community members on parole in finding employment while beautifying the city.
The funding comes from Caltrans via the Golden State Works program, which provides transitional employment and daily pay to people on parole.
The parolees work as part of Caltrans work crews to maintain and beautify freeways and highways. The program tracks success numbers through individuals enrolled, placement into permanent jobs, and job retention through the first year of employment.
From 2011 to 2025, Caltrans has provided more than $43 million to Oakland through the program.
“In Oakland we are always proud to support community members who are trying to get on their feet and give back,” Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement.
