Crime in Oakland is down over 30 percent this week compared to the same week in July last year, the city’s Police Department said.
Between July 14-20 of this year, overall crime was down 32 percent and violent crime was down 30 percent when compared to July 14-20 in 2024, police said.
No homicides were reported between July 14-20. Twenty-six robberies and 47 burglaries occurred, however.
Comparing year to year, homicides are down 24 percent this year compared to 2024, reported robberies are down 42 percent, and reported burglaries are down 24 percent.
The department didn’t offer specific reasons for the reduction in crime, except to say that it was due to its “commitment to maintaining safety in Oakland.”
Crime was down in 2024 over 2023, as well, according to department data. For example, there were 525 shootings in Oakland in 2023 and 126 homicides, compared to 354 shootings in 2024 and 86 homicides. Over the past six years, the city saw its biggest jump in crime during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, when there were 609 shootings and 134 homicides.
