Highlanders to face third-seeded Piner
Piedmont High School’s softball team advanced to the second round of the North Coast Section Division 5 playoffs with a 15-5 win at California School for the Deaf on May 20.
The No. 11 Highlanders will face third-seeded Piner on the road in the second round on May 23. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Piedmont jumped all over Julianna Hammons, scoring two in the first, five in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth. The game was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.
Samantha Ronen went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Highlanders. She hit two triples in the game. The first knocked in two runs in the second and made the score 5-0. Her second came in the third and drove in another run, making it 10-2.
Angelina Wu went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hannah Joerger was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Miya Fujimoto was 1-for-1 with three walks, two RBI and three runs scored.
Fujimoto also went all the way on the mound, allowing two earned runs in six innings on four hits, with eight strikeouts and six walks.
Timaree Serrano was 1-for-3 for the Eagles with an RBI and a run scored. Hammons was 1-for-4 with an RBI. On the mound, she went the distance, allowing 10 earned runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and seven walks.
Piedmont is now 14-10 on the season. Piner (16-8) had a first round bye. The teams have not played each other at least since 2005.
