Softball closed regular season on 8-3 run
Piedmont High School’s softball team dropped a 7-4 decision to host Mt. Eden on May 12 in the first round of the West Alameda County Conference Shoreline division playoffs.
The Highlanders (13-10) now await a potential North Coast Section playoff berth. Brackets will be announced on May 18.
Kealani Temoche went 6 1/3 innings for Mt. Eden in getting the win, allowing four runs (two earned) one eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Annelise Burgos came out to get out of a jam in the seventh, getting the final two outs and striking out one.
Miya Fujimoto went the distance for Piedmont, allowing four earned runs in six innings one eight hits with four strikeouts and seven walks.
Hannah Joerger was 2-for-4 for the Highlanders with two doubles and an RBI. Shelby Newcomb with 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for Mt. Eden. Temoche was 2-for-3 while Jasmine Cruz was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
On May 9, Piedmont defeated visiting Tennyson, 22-5 in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Angelina Wu was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Highlanders. Fujimoto was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Joerger was also 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Eunice Kouadio was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Kajsa Benson was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Samantha Ronen was 2-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Cyntiche Kouadio was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Fujimoto started and went three hitless innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Ronen went one inning, allowing five runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Cyntiche Kouadio went one inning with a walk and a strikeout.
Ashley Garay went all four innings for the Lancers, allowing 10 earned runs on 18 hits with two walks and a strikeout.
On May 7, visiting Piedmont beat San Lorenzo, 19-8 in a game shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule. Joerger went 2-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Wu went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Fujimoto went 1-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI.
Ronen started and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Fujimoto pitched two hitless innings, allowing one run with four strikeouts and a walk. Edie Elmquist went the final 1 2/3, allowing three runs on two hits with three walks.
Angelee Hernandez took the loss, going four innings and allowing nine runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Madison Pareja went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Grizzlies. Mariah Jack had two runs scored and two RBI.
Piedmont trailed 4-3 after two but got five runs in the third, fifth and six innings to blow the game open.
On May 6, the host Highlanders allowed two runs in the top of the seventh and lost a heartbreaker to Salesian, 5-4. An error allowed the tying run to the score and the go-ahead run came home on a groundout.
Joerger hit a bases-loaded double in the third to give Piedmont a 3-1 lead. The Pride got a run back in the fourth. DeAmor Coleman doubled in the tying run in the top of the sixth. Benson scored on a groundout in the bottom of the sixth to put the Highlanders back up.
Coleman went the distance to get the win, allowing one earned run on three hits with 11 strikeouts and six walks. Fujimoto went the distance as well, allowing one earned run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks.
On May 2, Piedmont shutout visiting Hayward, 15-0 in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Wu went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Fujimoto went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Joerger was 2-for-3. Ronen had no official at bats but walked twice with two RBI and two runs scored. Elmquist was 1-for-1 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Fujimoto threw a five inning no-hitter, striking out seven and walking two. Miana Corona started for the Farmers, allowing 14 runs (11 earned) on six hits and seven walks with a strikeout.
