The Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group announced today it will return to the Mountain View Cemetery on April 16 for a 7th Anniversary Spring Tour that will be conducted by author and long-time Mountain View docent Dennis Evanosky.
This tour by Evanosky will be his third with Walking on Wednesdays. He took the group for well received and attended walks in April 2023 and 2024. Evanosky is the historian for the Alameda Post newspaper. He has “history in his blood” and has written two books about Oakland’s history: “Oakland’s Laurel District” and “Oakland’s Mountain View Cemetery.” He’s also written books about Alameda and San Francisco.
The April 16 tour falls during the week of the Wednesday Walkers’ seventh anniversary. Their first walk was April 18, 2018, and a visit to the cemetery with its beautiful spring flowers and expansive views of Oakland, the Bay, and San Francisco will be a memorable way to celebrate this fun activity.
Rather than meeting at the Exedra at Magnolia and Highland Avenues in Piedmont, as the group usually does, walkers will meet in front of Mountain View’s main mausoleum. The tour will start at 10:30 a.m. and last for about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The cemetery is located at 5000 Piedmont Avenue at the end of Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. There is no charge for the event, and free parking is available on the streets inside the cemetery.
