Series ends with identical 8-5 scores
The Piedmont High School baseball team split a pair of games with West Alameda County Conference Foothill division rivals Encinal by identical 8-5 scores.
On March 27, the Highlanders took the opener of the two-game series at home. A four-run sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and delivered the victory. The inning opened with consecutive hit-by-pitches. Jonah Cha-Foster then sacrificed the runners up. William Ferreira singled in a run and a second scored on a ground out. Will Parker capped the inning with a two-run double.
Diego Delventhal got the win, pitching the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Massimo Mittone went the first five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Markos Lagios went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Parker was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. His sixth inning double was his second of the game. Ferreira was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Shafer Dando was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Eric Proctor was 3-for-3 for the Jets with two runs scored. Kainoa Otenbriet was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Shaun Presley was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Sebastian Brune took the loss, allowing the four runs in one inning of work. He surrendered two hits and one walk. Kyle Cook went the first five, allowing four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Jets came back the next day to take the victory at home. Piedmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three in the first and two in the second. But Encinal’s pitching shut the Highlanders down the rest of the way and took the lead with the Jets own four-run sixth.
A Piedmont error allowed the tying run. Anthony Wilson singled in two to put Encinal on top. A bases-loaded walk forced in the fourth run.
Parker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Highlanders. Brandon Dicke was also 2-for-3. Lagios was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Ferreira started, going four innings and allowing four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Jack Meyjes took the loss, working the sixth and allowing the four runs on three hits with a strikeout and three walks.
Darren Olson got the win for the Jets, going the final three innings and allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk. Wilson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Otenbriet was 3-for-4.
Piedmont is scheduled to play at Arroyo on April 3. The Highlanders will play in a tournament in Concord on April 5-8.
