Oakland has completed a $5 million project to renovate and beautify nine mini parks in historically underserved neighborhoods.
The effort, funded by Caltrans’ Clean California local grant program, transformed vandalized, overgrown spaces with resurfaced play areas, upgraded seating, new landscaping and shade trees. Six parks received new play equipment.
The parks are:
- 88th Avenue Mini Park, 1803 88th Ave.
- Cesar Chavez Mini Park, 1800 38th Ave.
- Eula Brinson Mini Park, 1712 85th Ave.
- Gwen Jackson Mini Park, 3042 Nicol Ave.
- Lazear Mini Park, 850 29th Ave.
- McClymonds Mini Park, 2528 Linden St.
- Morgan Plaza, 2601 Highland Ave.
- Tomás Melero-Smith Mini Park, 1461 65th Ave.
- Vantage Point Park, 1198 13th Ave.
The opening of the parks was marked with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting Friday at Tomás Melero-Smith Park.
The park is named for a youth recreation leader at Carmen Flores Community Center in Fruitvale who was killed in 2007 at the age of 19 by a gunman who mistook him for a rival gang member, city officials said.
