Piedmont High School’s girls soccer team played tough at Alameda on Jan. 17 but fell 4-3.
The Highlanders were missing several top players including goalkeeper Friedie Schickedanz, top scorer Elsa Wallway, defender Louisa Symkowick as well as injured center backs Darcy McKee and Eliza Hammond.
The Hornets went up 1-0 early in the game when Olivia Vu scored on a rebound in the third minute. Vu helped make it 2-0 in the 13th minute when she set up Eva Bicynski with a long pass.
Piedmont responded in the 28th minute with a long pass of its own. That came from Kyla Williams to Ryo Woltag, who got behind the defense to score.
In the 38th minute, Alameda made it 3-1 when Vu took a turnover in front of the net and put the ball in. The Highlanders quickly responded, getting a direct kick a minute later, which Hannah Sullivan put home. The score was 3-2 at halftime.
A poor clearing pass went right to the Hornets Holly Becker on the left side of the goal in the 43rd minute and she scored to make it 4-2. In the 50th minute, Williams stole the ball right in front of the Alameda net and scored to make it 4-3.
The teams have a rematch scheduled on Jan. 22 at Witter Field. Piedmont is now 4-4-2 on the season, 1-1-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. The Hornets are now 4-5-1 and 2-1.
