Piedmont High School’s girls basketball team split a pair of Martin Luther King holiday events.
The Highlanders beat the Menlo School 52-33 on Jan. 18 at the MLK Classic at St. Mary’s College Prep-Stockton.
Piedmont got out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter. But the Knights rallied in the second quarter and it was 25-22 Highlanders at halftime.
In the second half, Piedmont took control and cruised home. Andrea Martin led the way with 15 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists. Jenelle Solis had nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Cleo Afsar also had nine points and added three rebounds.
Briana Webb had seven points and nine rebounds and Taylor White contributed six points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Karen Xin led the Menlo School with 14 points. Ruiqi Liu added 10 points.
On Jan. 20, Piedmont fell to Centennial-Las Vegas 81-66 at the annual O’Dowd MLK Classic at Bishop O’Dowd. The Highlanders were up early, leading 19-17 after one quarter, and trailed 59-56 entering the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs were able to pull away at the end.
Webb led Piedmont with 22 points and seven rebounds. Martin had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Solis had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals. Shakila Zuberi had nine points. White had seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Savannah Dennig had five points, four rebounds and three assists.
Centennial was led by Nation Williams, who scored 24 points D’Arrah Mitchell had 22 points including eight in the fourth quarter.
The Highlanders are now 13-3 on the season and are next scheduled to play on Jan. 23 at Alameda.
