City, PADC to host annual MLK Day Celebration on Jan. 20

The Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee and the City of Piedmont will host the 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Alan Harvey Theater at 11 a.m.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Separate is Never Equal: Fight Injustice.” It comes from a speech that Dr. King gave in 1966, when he called on people to never feel comfortable with any form of segregation, tyranny, or supremacy.

“I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination,” he said. “I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few.”

This year’s event, incidentally, will take place on the same day as the presidential inauguration.

The program will feature keynote speaker Ericka Huggins, an educator, leading Black Panther Party member, former political prisoner, human rights advocate, and poet.

It will also include performances by the Oakland Youth Chamber Chorus and Destiny Arts Junior Dance Company. Corrina Gould of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust will offer a land acknowledgement.

Admission is free. Tickets can be reserved HERE.
