Boys basketball advances in tournament

Piedmont High School’s boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on the new season with a 74-36 win over Envision Academy on December 5 in the first round of the 34th annual Piedmont Tournament at Binks Gymnasium.

The Highlanders advanced to the semifinals on December 6 against Acalanes. Scheduled tipoff is 8:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the game between Head-Royce and Northgate on December 7 at 6 p.m.

Everybody on the Piedmont roster scored against Envision. Lucian Fang Ring led the Highlanders with 15 points. Dillon Casey had 12 and Ravi Silverberg added 10. Cash Panico contributed seven points while Will Hinman and P.J. Brayer each scored six.

The Black Panthers were led by Jayquan McClendon’s 15 points.

Piedmont jumped to a 24-2 lead after one quarter and the Highlanders never looked back.

On December 3, Piedmont defeated visiting Pinole Valley, 70-42. Silverberg led the way with 23 points while Casey scored 20. Akash Bornstein and Beach Lorin each scored seven.

Jaylin Reid led the Spartans with 24 points.

The Highlanders took a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and steadily built upon it, leading 30-19 at halftime and 49-33 after three quarters.
