Jacoby nets four in non-league victory
Abigail Jacoby scored four goals and Esme Krumins added one to lead the Piedmont High School girls water polo team to a 5-3 victory over San Rafael at Marin Academy on October 25.
Highlanders coach Georgia Lewis said opposing defenses are concentrating on Vivian Burke which creates space for other players.
“Vivian Burke has become a pro at forcing multiple defenders to cover her,” Lewis said. “If three of their players need to defend her, that leaves our offense open, which creates scoring opportunities for the entire team. She takes a real beating doing it.”
Piedmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
Alma Camacho had two goals for the Bulldogs. Alex Markwick had the other.
The defense was strong as well for the Highlanders. Chloe Graham had eight saves and the rest of the team kept the ball away from the net.
“Sonja ten Grotenhuis has upped her defensive game to leap out and steal the ball before it ever gets to the offense,” Lewis said. “Tonight she had seven steals, beautiful interceptions leaping high out of the water. Chloe Graham was just on fire tonight.”
On October 22, Piedmont fell to Bishop O’Dowd 16-7 at Mills College. Jacoby again led the way with five goals. Krumins and Mara Pisani had the others. Jacoby also had four steals. Ten Grotenhuis had four steals and three assists. Sydney Olsen had two assists while Jacoby and Rachel Young had one apiece. Graham had four saves and three steals.
Mia Walsh and Riley Welch each scored five goals for the Dragons. Delaney Welch scored three times and Savanna Shannon twice.
Piedmont next plays in the West Alameda County Conference tournament, which began October 28.
