Girls water polo | Piedmont comes up short on senior night

Piedmont v. Encinal Oct. 8

Vivianne Burke scored four goals and Rachel Young contributed three as Piedmont High School’s girls water polo team came up short at Encinal on Oct. 8, as the Jets won, 13-11.

Piedmont, which has no home games while the Piedmont pool is being rebuilt, was celebrating senior night. Chloe Graham, Julia Montes and Sonja ten Grotenhuis were honored by the team.

The Highlanders (6-10) got off to a 4-1 lead early on. Arza Wienskowski scored the game’s first goal for Encinal, but Piedmont roared back with four consecutive scores by Burke.

The Jets answered with the next five goals to take a 6-4 lead.

The match stayed close with ties at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10. Hannah Reid finally put Encinal up for good with a goal with two minutes, 52 seconds to go in regulation. Serena Sanguinetti then scored an insurance goal with 2:13 left. Young added an assist.

Esme Krumins had two goals and two assists to go along with a steal. Abigail Jacoby had five assists and a goal along with seven steals. Sydney Olsen had a goal and a steal. Ten Grotenhuis had four steals and two assists. Graham had three saves and a steal while Montes recorded an assist.

Kiely Wong led Encinal with four goals. Grace Harriet had three goals for the Jets.

Piedmont is scheduled to play at Berkeley on Oct. 15.
