Girls water polo | Piedmont beats Lick-Wilmerding, 17-11

Abigail Jacoby and Sydney Olsen each scored three goals to help lead the Piedmont High School girls water polo team to a 17-11 win over host Lick-Wilmerding-San Francisco at City College of San Francisco on October 3. Jacoby added five assists and Olsen added one.

The match was close into the third quarter. The Highlanders held a 4-3 lead after one quarter and 7-6 at halftime. The Tigers managed to tie the score early in the third quarter. But Piedmont then scored the next two goals and eight of the next nine to take control.

Esme Krumins, Viviane Burke, Rachel Young and Celeste Dickason each scored twice for Piedmont. Mara Pisani, Julia Montes and Sonja ten Grotenhuis had one goal apiece. Montes recorded three assists while Krumins and Zoe Waitkus each had two. Waitkus also had six saves.

On September 30, Piedmont lost a tight game at Foothill, 9-8. Jacoby led the way with four goals. Olsen had two goals while Burke and ten Grotenhuis each had one. Natalie Williams led the Falcons with four goals.

The Highlanders fell behind 2-0 and 4-1 in the first half. However, they fought back to tie the score at 4-4 early in the third quarter. Jacoby scored the tying goal with five minutes, 20 seconds to go in the third period.

Mikayla Esguerra put Foothill up for good 12 seconds later. Esguerra finished with two goals. Piedmont is now 6-9 on the season, 1-1 in West Alameda County Conference play. The next scheduled match is October 8 at Encinal.
