Girls tennis | Piedmont drops pair of matches

The Piedmont High School girls tennis team lost a pair of tough matches at home, one to a nonleague foe and the other to Alameda.

On Sept. 25, the Highlanders lost to Marin Academy, 6-1. Three of the matches went to tie-breakers.

Piedmont’s lone win came at No. 3 doubles where Inara Mehta and Abigail Call defeated Sasha Yolles and Ally Flagal, 6-3, 6-1. Marin Academy’s Jane McDermott and Alice Elegant beat Faith Chin and Emma Eisemon at No. 1, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5. Lily Wagner and Walker Young outlasted Emma Chan and Maddie Tran at No. 2, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.

In singles, Eloise Sent downed Carolina Romanczuk at No. 1, 7-5, 6-1. Amelia Thomas beat Kate Jumper at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. Ann McDermott defeated Arianna Kortum at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. And Rani Haddad took the No. 4 match over Lila Rosen, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.

“Three of the matches went to third set match tiebreaks and despite winning the first set in each we lost all of them,” Piedmont coach Jim Landes said. “We need to avoid letting up after a first set win.”

On Sept. 26, Alameda beat Piedmont, 5-2. Chin pulled out a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 come from behind win at No. 4 singles over Sophie Featherstone for one of the Highlanders points. The other came at No. 2 doubles where Chan and Tran were tied with Zoey Jalleh and Nora Lloyd at 7-5, 3-6, 5-5 when the Hornet team had to retire. Alice Chen beat Romanczuk at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Juliana Johnson defeated Jumper at No. 2 by the same scores. Renata Serna downed Kortum at No. 3, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Natalie Wong and Abby More beat Samantha Huynh and Eisemon at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-3. Caroline Sue and Lauren Yee defeated Mehta and Call at No. 3, 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.

Piedmont is scheduled to face Justin-Siena-Napa on October 2 but the week’s heat wave may lead to a postponement or cancellation.
