Smokey napping with Lola

I have grown up with Smokey and love to snuggle with her on our couch.

Name: Smokey

Members of Family: Rebecca, Edward, Jackson, Juliana, and Lola (our two-year-old dog) Thornborrow

Age: 9 years old

Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Adoption Story: In November, 2015, we decided to “take a look” at the dogs and cats in the Macy’s Union Square windows. Every year, the SF SPCA hosts an adoption event at Macy’s during the holidays, and we happened to be in Union Square. Smokey was all by herself in a cage inside Macy’s (she wasn’t one of the animals in the windows that day), with no littermates or friends to play with, so we decided she needed to come home with us.

Favorite napping spot: Smokey likes any sunny spot, especially the bench in our dining room and the blue pillow in our kitchen. She also loves to find a warm lap in the evenings while we are reading or watching TV.

Favorite toy: Smokey likes toy mice and the laser pointer. She also likes rubber bands and bread ties if she finds one lying around in the kitchen, as well as swatting at our dog Lola’s tail from time to time.

Interesting facts: Smokey loves chin rubs and head scratches. She is very social and often greets visitors in the entryway to see if they might feed her or give her attention.  She is an indoor cat but loves to go outside if we carry her, and she often watches out the window and meows when we take our dog outside.

Anything else: When we adopted Smokey in 2015, we had an elderly cat, Dante, who did not want to be disturbed, so unfortunately we had to keep them apart.  We also had a one-year-old puppy named Cali, and she and Smokey became the best of friends. We always tell people that Cali raised Smokey, and that’s why she is so social and comfortable around strangers. Cali and Smokey often napped together and were completely comfortable around each other. Sadly Cali passed away in 2023. Smokey tolerates (and sometimes plays and naps with) our other dog Lola, now two years old.
