Early on the morning of Sept. 23, a suspect was reported to be attempting to enter the rear door of a residence near La Salle and Sea View avenues. The incident was reported about 12:45 a.m., approximately 10 minutes after it happened, according to Captain Chris Monahan of the Piedmont Police Department. The reporting person said a male suspect was caught on a surveillance camera. Officers arrived and determined the suspect attempted to enter a detached garage but the suspect was not found. Video showed the suspect trying to open the rear door and walking around the property with a flashlight.
Captain Monahan said a nearby vehicle appeared to have been rifled through as well.
Piedmont Police were able to apprehend one suspect of two that were reported to be attempting to break into vehicles on the morning of Sept. 18. The report came in around 3 a.m. on Kingston Avenue. Piedmont Police arrived several minutes later and the suspects fled in different directions, according to a post on the Police
Department’s Facebook page.
One suspect was arrested. They were on probation for assault with a deadly weapon and other charges, according to the Facebook post. The post said they were found to be in possession of methamphetamine, narcotics, burglary tools, stolen property and stolen mail.
The suspect was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. The other suspect is at large.
On Sept. 15, two vehicles reported stolen were found on Kempton Way. A Piedmont Police officer found a silver Hyundai Elantra parked with no license plates. A VIN check showed it had been reported stolen out of Berkeley. In front of that vehicle was a green 1998 Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen out of Oakland. The owners were notified.
Around 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 16, a black 2001 Chevrolet Astro van was reported stolen on Hillside Avenue. The work van was reported to be worth $4,000. A suspect vehicle was reported to be a 2007 Lexus ES350 spray painted black. No suspects are known at this time.
On Sept. 17, a 2018 Ford F250 with a trailer was reported stolen on Hampton Road and La Salle. The victim is Terra Landscape which was doing work at the corner at the time. The vehicle was stolen at approximately 7:30 a.m. and was tracked and recovered the same day.
An apparent attempted vehicle theft happened on Sept. 15 on Ramona Avenue. The victim reported the incident on Sept. 17. The victim said between the hours of 12 midnight and 9 a.m. on Sept. 15, an unknown suspect damaged the door lock on a 2023 Acura MDX. The damage to the lock was reported to be $1,000. Captain Monahan said there was an attempt to use a key programmer to start the vehicle.
On Sept. 17, an unknown suspect or suspects entered a residence on Hampton Road. According to Captain Monahan, the suspect or suspects entered via a back bedroom window, conducted a “messy” search of the residence and left via the backdoor. Police have been unable to contact the homeowner and do not have an estimate of loss. Another resident on the block had video surveillance of an SUV leaving the area at 10:59 p.m., a minute after the reported time of the incident.
On Sept. 18, Piedmont Police conducted a traffic stop of a blue 2018 Jeep Renegade for violation of the basic speed law. The officer reported the female driver had watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to Captain Monahan. He said preliminary tests showed Blood Alcohol levels of 0.15 and 0.16. She was arrested for DUI and taken to Santa Rita Jail.
