Piedmont High School’s girls tennis team traveled to The Menlo School for the Golden State Tennis Championships on Sept. 6. The all-doubles format gave the team a chance to play with a slightly different scoring system than the standard four singles and three doubles format.
The Highlanders went 1-4 at the tournament. They opened on Sept. 6 by losing 4-1 to Los Gatos. Lila Rosen and Hallie Burden got the point for Piedmont, winning their match, 8-6.
Carolina Romanczuk and Kate Jumper lost the No. 1 match, 8-1. Faith Chin and Emma Chan battled at No. 3, falling 8-6. Inara Mehta and Alina Shahid fell 8-5 at No. 4. Arianna Kortum and Samantha Huynh lost the No. 2 match, 8-1.
Scores were not available for Piedmont’s second match, a 3-2 loss to Homestead-Cupertino. The Highlanders then fell to Leigh-San Jose, 3-2.
On Sept. 7, Piedmont lost to Foothill-Pleasanton, 4-1. Huynh and Emma Eiseman got the win, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 match. No. 5s Mehta and Shahid lost a thriller, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
The Highlanders won their final match over Gunn-Palo Alto, 5-0. Romanczuk and Eiseman won at No. 1, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Kortum and Jumper won No. 2, 6-4, 6-1. Chin and Chan took No.3, 6-2, 6-3, 10-6. Huynh and Amelia Addington were victorious at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0. And Ella Thomasson and Chiara Silvio won at No. 5, 6-2. 6-2.
The team hosted San Leandro on Sept. 10 and will play at home against University-San Francisco on Sept. 11.
