Piedmont High School’s boys water polo team fell in a tight match at Newark Memorial on Sept. 3, 13-11. Rylan Patty had three goals, an assist and a steal to lead the Highlanders. Elles Krieckhaus had two goals, an assist and three steals for Piedmont. Charlie Wright had two goals and an assist and Henry Stein scored two goals.
Hayden Jahn and Leo Hurwitz each scored a goal for the Highlanders. Luke McAuliffe had five saves.
The Cougars blasted out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Eventually, they built the lead to 11-3 in the third quarter. But Piedmont rallied back. Jahn’s goal cut it to 12-9 with two minutes, 14 seconds to go in regulation. Then, with 1:04 left, Hurwitz scored to cut the deficit to two.
But Noah Caron got an insurance goal for Newark Memorial with 0:53 on the clock and the Cougars survived. Caron, Leslie Kim and Miguel Medrano each scored three goals for Newark Memorial. Isaac Taylor saved five shots for the Cougars.
Piedmont is now 2-3 on the season. The Highlanders are scheduled to play at Foothill in Pleasanton on Sept. 11.
