The Blotter | Woman in car has purse stolen at intersection

Suspect smashed passenger side window

A woman driving in a car stopped at the intersection of Grand and Oakland avenues had her passenger side window smashed and her purse stolen on August 12.

The incident happened at 1:47 p.m. The woman was driving a Toyota RAV4 and came to a stop at a red light. A Honda Accord estimated to be from 2017-2023 pulled up behind and a person got out, smashed the window, and took the driver’s purse. The vehicle had a “switch” plate of CA 9AXX330, according to Piedmont Police Department Captain Chris Monahan. The Honda Accord fled North on Grand.

The purse contained $500, house keys, the key fob to the RAV4, check books and credit cards, according to Captain Monahan. He said the Accord had license plates that had been stolen out of Vallejo.

At 4:55 a.m. on August 10, a suspect reported to be checking car doors was detained on Kingston Avenue. Captain Monahan said the suspect gave a false name. Officers determined his name based on a drivers license and found the suspect had a warrant out of Alameda. A grinder was found in his bag. The suspect was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and charged with providing a false identity to police and possession of burglary tools.

On August 13, a man was reported to be in a caller’s vehicle at 5:55 a.m. Police found the suspect, who told police he was in the vehicle, “looking for a napkin,” according to Captain Monahan. The suspect was cited for vehicle tampering and given a courtesy ride to the Rockridge BART, according to the police log.

At 7:40 a.m. on August 13, Piedmont Police located a 2018 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen out of Oakland. The vehicle was parked in the area of Kempton and Fairmount avenues with the engine running and a woman in the passenger seat, according to Captain Monahan. Police did records check on the woman and found her clean. She was cited for possession of a stolen vehicle and released, according to Captain Monahan.

The Accord was towed.
