The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Wednesday afternoon include:
- The 40th anniversary Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival is canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, city officials announced Tuesday. The festival was originally scheduled for Sept. 19-20 and was set to include more than 175 artists, local breweries, wineries, food stands and live entertainment.
- The Oakland Zoo can reopen and outdoor dining can resume in Alameda County following the state’s approval of a variance from certain activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, county public health officials announced Wednesday.
- Alameda County supervisors Tuesday bid farewell to the county’s former health officer, who was sworn in as the state’s epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Erica Pan was Alameda County’s health officer for a year, including the period since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic, and overall had served the county for 8-1/2 years in more than one role.
- To increase enforcement of Contra Costa County’s COVID-19 health orders, county leaders asked Tuesday for an ordinance to allow county workers to issue infraction tickets to businesses, houses of worship and other groups that are seen violating the rules. County supervisors also asked for a dedicated telephone hotline for reporting violations of the health order, in part to motivate more compliance with the rules.
