This month’s film is the sizzling 1959 American comedy “Some Like It Hot”, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis. Adding to the fun are two stars who came out of retirement to lend their talents: George Raft and the great Joe E. Brown.
Nominated for seven Academy Awards, “Some Like It Hot” received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and is considered among the best films of all time. Roger Ebert said of it, “Wilder’s comedy is one of the enduring treasures of the movies, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft.” In 1989, the movie became one of the first 25 inducted into the United States National Film Registry, and in 1999 Entertainment Weekly voted it number nine on their list of “100 Greatest Movies.” It was voted the top comedy movie ever by the American Film Institute.
“Some Like It Hot” will be screened on July 11, at a one-time Flix Fest starting time of 3:30 p.m.. Sponsored by the Piedmont Recreation Department, the event takes place at 801 Magnolia Avenue on the second Thursday of each month. Doors for this showing will open at 3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone over 18 years of age. The next movie in the Piedmont series, the Chinese director Zhang Zimou’s much-honored 1994 drama “To Live”, will be shown on August 8, at the usual time of 1:00 p.m.
