Updated on June 8 to correct an oversight on the tennis awards.
The West Alameda County Conference has announced its all-league teams for spring sports and Piedmont High School athletes earned several honors.
Badminton
Maddie Xiong was named Player of the Year in badminton for the WACC Shoreline League. Also named to the first team were Jonathan Phmah and Mandy Tang. San Lorenzo’s Anthony Do also was named Player of the Year. Highlanders Aman Jajodia and Delia Wu received honorable mention.
Baseball
Markos Lagios was named Player of the Year in the WACC Foothill League baseball. Lagios played center field and catcher for the Foothill Champion Highlanders. Shortstop and pitcher Peter Krumins joined Lagios on the 14-member first team as did catcher Will Parker. Bishop O’Dowd’s Nick Haas was named Pitcher of the Year. Piedmont left fielder Dimitri Papahadjopoulos and pitcher Seve Sanchez earned second team honors. Right fielder and third baseman Shafer Dando was named honorable mention.
Golf
Bodhi Bloemker, who made the North Coast Section Division 1 tournament, was named first team in boys golf.
Tennis
Arun Brahma, Ben Breber, Monte Imburg and Lukas Smolko all claimed first team honors in Foothill League boys tennis. There were 14 members on the first team. Bishop O’Dowd’s Neo Chai was named Player of the Year. Nick King and Nate Welch received honorable mentions.
Lacrosse
Piedmont took five of 15 slots on the girls lacrosse team: Hallie Burden, Chloe Graham, Ruby Guzdar, Hailey Marshburn and Friedie Schickedanz. Bishop O’Dowd’s Lucy Yu, daughter of former Piedmont boys coach Alexander Yu, was named Player of the Year. Highlanders Laurel Bentley, Luisa Cole, Jane Hempeck and Peyton Watson were named to the second team. Henley Lorin was named honorable mention.
Keita Clear and Rylan Nelson earned first team boys lacrosse honors. Berkeley’s Hayden Hockenbrock was named the WACC Player of the Year. Connor Fredericks, Logan Huh, Oliver Shafroth and Gus von Metzsch were members of the second team. Ethan Alering and Curtis Hohener received honorable mention.
Swimming and Diving
Six of the 12 members of the boys swimming and diving team came from Piedmont: Owen Blanford, Cole Carnazzo, Nikita Costello, Thomas Rolefson, Dimitri Secor and Asher Takazawa. Castro Valley’s Simon Li was named Swimmer of the Year. Evan Byun was named to the second team.
Softball
Miya Fujimoto and Angelina Wu were named to the first team in Shoreline League softball. Both pitched and played infield for Piedmont. Encinal’s Cameron Tran was named Pitcher of the Year and San Leandro’s Jade Orta was the Player of the Year. Making the second team was catcher Mia Leggett. Third baseman Sa’mara Levi and infielder Samantha Ronen received honorable mention.
Track and Field
In girls track and field, pole vaulter Shayna Chau was named to the first team. Castro Valley’s Idara Essien claimed Track Athlete of the Year and Bishop O’Dowd’s Azsiyah Sapp-Beito took Field Athlete of the Year. Breah Bell, Skylar Best, Daniela Lucaccini, Jamie Schwarz and Ella Yasar were all named to the second team. Alina Shahid earned honorable mention.
In boys track, Xander Schulte-Sasse and Sebastien Swain were named to the second team. Berkeley’s Olaff Dietz was Track Athlete of the Year while Bishop O’Dowd’s Brandon Rush was Field Athlete of the Year. Albert Bellingrath and Albert Long were Highlanders who received honorable mention.
Volleyball
John Champion received second team honors in Foothill League boys volleyball. Bishop O’Dowd’s Cameron Kosty was named Player of the Year. Shunji Higashi and Lucas Kim were honorable mention for Piedmont.
