Piedmont High School’s baseball team scored a sweep over a tough Alameda team, winning on back-to-back days.
The Highlanders got a complete game, one-hit shutout from John Olsen on April 2 at home to win 2-0. Olsen allowed only a second inning single by Kayden Thai. He struck out five and walked three.
Meantime, Olsen got the only run he needed when Markos Lagios led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left.
Lagios scored the game’s only other run in the third when Peter Krumins drew a bases-loaded walk.
Olsen walked Luis Sanchez with one out in the top of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate. But he got Thai to fly out to left, then struck out Alijah Meadows.
Max Cohen was the hard-luck loser for the Hornets, going the distance and allowing the two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Lagios went 3-for-3 on the day.
The next day, Piedmont recorded a 7-2 win on the island. Three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings proved the difference for the Highlanders.
With Piedmont leading 1-0 entering the top of the fourth, Dimitri Papahadjopoulos tripled in a run to double the lead. Shafer Dando doubled in Papahadjopoulos. Jack Meyjes hit an infield single and Dando scored on an error by Meadows to make it 4-0.
Alameda got two back in the bottom of the frame. Sanchez knocked in one with a ground out and another run scored on a Krumins wild pitch.
In the fifth, Will Parker singled in Lagios for a run. Dando then singled in two to make it 7-2.
Lagios went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Papahadjopoulos went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Krumins went 4 1/3 innings, allowing the two runs on one hit. Seve Sanchez came on and finished, going 2 2/3 innings, retiring all eight batters he faced and striking out two.
Piedmont (11-2) is next scheduled to play at Arroyo on April 15.
