The Piedmont High School track and field team had a good weekend at the Stanford Invitational on March 29-30.
The girls 1,600-meter relay team dropped their season-best by eight seconds, finishing its heat in four minutes, 13.62 seconds. The team of Ella Yasar, Jamie Schwarz, Elsa Wallway, and Skylar Best also finished four seconds better than last year’s team did at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions.
According to coach Pouyan Assadi, it’s the best time this year by any school in the NCS Bayshore section.
“According to my documentation, this is the fifth-fastest girls time in the 100-year history of Piedmont track and field,” Assadi said.
The Highlanders also ran a heat in the Distance Medley Relay, finishing in 13:27.12. That’s a season-best for the team of Schwarz, Wallway, Leighton Mand, and Best.

Piedmont’s boys Distance Medley team of Xander Schulte-Sasse, Maddox Ma, Sebastien Swain, and Julien Lee was ninth in its heat in 11:02.05. Schulte-Sasse was 10th in the boys 3,200 in 9:21.71, which was a personal-best by seven seconds, according to Assadi. The coach said this is the third-best time by a Piedmont runner in 30 years.
“Xander’s been more aggressive than ever, and with all these speed workouts the distance team is doing it’s no surprise he has a bite in his step that we haven’t seen yet,” Assadi said.
Proud of our runners.
