Letter to the Editor | Strengthening our community beyond the classroom

As a member of the Piedmont Education Foundation Board of Directors and several other community groups, I have had the opportunity to observe the way our community rallies to support our schools. I’d like to speak directly to a vital segment of our population that is very supportive, but doesn’t always get the spotlight: our residents who do not currently have children in the Piedmont Unified School District.

Whether you are a “new-nester,” like me, who moved here for the beauty and safety of our town, or an “empty-nester” who remains part of this close-knit community, you are a crucial part of what makes Piedmont thrive. It is a common misconception that PUSD only serves families with students. In reality, our schools offer cultural and athletic experiences for the entire city. From the high-caliber musical performances to the vibrant theater productions and public art displays, the district provides a social and intellectual “hub” that enriches the Piedmont experience.

A perfect example of this synergy is coming up on May 18. Between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., the PHS theater lobby will host the AP Art exhibit, showcasing the incredible talent of our student artists. These exhibits are a testament to the creativity and rigor our community supports, and they are truly impressive to view.

To celebrate this community connection, I would like to personally invite my fellow Piedmont “empty-nesters” neighbors to join me and other members of the PEF Board of Directors for some snacks and margaritas at the Ellis Family Pavilion overlooking our city’s fantastic new pool that same evening.

Please feel free to drop in before or after you visit the art exhibit. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some refreshments, meet and reconnect with fellow community members, and see firsthand how our collective investment in education creates a more vibrant Piedmont for everyone.

Our schools aren’t just for students; they are the foundation of our shared civic life. I hope to see you on the 18th to celebrate the art, the energy, and the people that make this town so special.
