Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said she has been in “close contact” with police after a student was shot Wednesday afternoon at Skyline High School and two young people were arrested.
“My thoughts are with the students, families, and staff affected by today’s shooting at Skyline High School,” said Lee in a Wednesday evening statement. “We are praying for the victims (sic) full and speedy recovery, and to his family, we send our strength and support.”
The student was shot just before 1:30 p.m. at the campus in the East Oakland hills and when officers arrived they found one juvenile who had been shot at least once, police said.
Officers provided first aid until paramedics took the victim to the hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
Two juveniles were arrested and officers found two guns at the scene, according to police.
No other information was provided.
Lee said gun violence is a crisis that has no place in schools.
“We will continue working with law enforcement, community partners, and school officials to protect our children and ensure our schools remain sanctuaries of learning, not scenes of violence like today,” Lee said.
A spokesperson for the Oakland Unified School District said there will be classes at the campus tomorrow, as well as support services for students and staff.
Last May, three people were injured in a parking lot shooting after Skyline High’s graduation ceremony.
In September, the campus was placed on lockdown after someone reported that a student might have brought a gun to school, but no guns were found and no one was injured.
