A 19-year-old University of California at Berkeley student has died after being pulled or climbing out of a pool during an off-campus fraternity party last week, police announced.
The student was found lying beside the pool at about 11:30 p.m. Friday during a large party in the 2400 block of Prospect Street that more than 300 people were attending, according to Berkeley police.
The student had been hospitalized since Friday but it’s unclear when exactly he died. His name has not been released. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death but police don’t suspect foul play.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and the wider campus community. The harm felt by this tragic loss is profound,” Berkeley police said in a news release Wednesday.
Because officers at the time “observed conditions consistent with overcrowding and heavy alcohol consumption,” the fraternity was issued a code violation for allegedly creating a public nuisance during a “loud and unruly” gathering, according to police.
Also, the Berkeley Fire Department revoked an indoor entertainment event permit that had been approved for the next day.
Police sent the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for potential criminal charges against the fraternity safety coordinator on suspicion of violating a state law that prohibits the furnishing of alcohol to minors, according to police.
