A new immersive art experience called Aura is lighting up Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
Church officials and the show’s innovators and producers introduced Aura—in which the majestic church on Nob Hill serves as a canvas for projections, illusions, lighting effects and original music—to an invited audience on Thursday evening.
Bishop Austin Rios told the crowd, seated in pews, “Welcome to the final preview. I hope you are as excited as we are.” Noting that “Cathedrals have historically been centers of art in their community, we are proud to carry on that tradition at Grace. We are proud to be the first U.S. site for Aura, following Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal and Dôme des Invalides in Paris.”
The 40-ish minute show is created by Moment Factory, a Montreal-based company specializing in site-specific, high-tech ticketed attractions involving video, lighting, architecture, sound, interactivity and special effects. The co-presenter is Fever, a “global live entertainment discovery platform” that has introduced millions of people to similar interactive experiences in several dozen countries.
Aura presenters also encourage visitors to discover aspects of the cathedral’s extensive history and distinctive architecture by using a web app that provides information about the church’s unique features as well as connects audiences to the show and offers them a keepsake photo.
Ticket prices for Aura vary according to the day and time of booking. Reservations are highly recommended.
Aura continues at Grace Cathedral, 1100 California St., San Francisco. Tickets, currently available through Dec. 31, are about $23-$42 at https://auragracecathedral.com/#experience.
