Kids can sock-skate to “Jingle Bells” under a replica moon, make their own snow, quaff hot cocoa and otherwise enjoy Winterfest at Oakland’s Chabot Space & Science Center Dec. 21-22.
Winterfest is an interactive event at the center blending science and seasonal cheer, not to mention giving families a chance to take refuge from the blitzkrieg of shopping on the last weekend before Christmas.
“Sock-skating” refers to gliding across a linoleum-type polished surface wearing socks or booties over shoes. There are two rinks, one for children under five and the other for those six and older. Models of the sun and the moon hang from the ceiling.
Led by Science Explorers, high school students helping out at the center, children can make edible Mars Rover replicas out of graham crackers and create comets out of dry ice during Winterfest, all for the price of admission.
Chabot is a non-profit science center that serves Oakland and the greater Bay Area as a place for science, technology, English and math learning and engagement.
