Thousands of runners expected to take to streets Sunday for Berkeley Half Marathon

Bay City News

Zipping down Telegraph Avenue, jogging around the UC Berkeley campus and on to the finish line, thousands of people are expected to run in the Berkeley Half Marathon Sunday.

The 13.1-mile race begins at 7:30 a.m. on Milvia Street at Kittredge, winding its way through some of the city’s most scenic areas and ending up at Civic Center Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where a blowout party will follow.

For those who might be daunted by a race with the word “marathon” in it, there are shorter versions of the route. For example, dogs, strollers and kiddos are welcome in the 5K (translation: 3.1-mile) version of the race.

Also, the Sunday races are preceded by a kids’ 1K race on Saturday starting and ending at the Sports Basement on Milvia Street.

The price to compete in the Berkeley Half Marathon varies by race, with lower fees for the shorter races.

Motorists take note: There will be street closures to accommodate the race, including a closure of Interstate 80 exits from University Avenue from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. For details on the street closures and the race in general, visit the race website.
