UC Berkeley warns students, public of rising electric scooter thefts as fall semester starts

University of California, Berkeley authorities are warning students and the public against electric scooter theft as the fall semester starts.

In an advisory on Monday, UC Berkeley said electric scooter theft cases in and near the campus are increasing.

The university gave the following precautions to deter theft:

  • Always lock up the scooter.
  • Use a high-quality U-lock affixed between the scooter stem and the deck to secure the frame to the bike rack.
  • Leave the scooter in a visible, well-lighted area.
  • When possible, do not leave scooters out overnight or for extended periods.
  • Keep a record of the serial number in case of theft.

If an electric scooter is stolen at the campus, people should report the theft immediately to the UC Police Department at (510) 642-6760.
